, the leader in Web-enabled product evaluation and development, today announced that the latest update to the Microsoft Windows CE .NET embedded operating system, Windows CE .NET version 4.1, will be available for testing and evaluation online through its Small Device Lab (www.SmallDeviceLab.com) on microprocessor platforms from Hibachi, Intel, National Semiconductor, and NEC. Online evaluation sessions are available to qualified embedded developers over the Internet at no charge. Earlier versions of Microsoft's small footprint, real-time operating system, including Windows CE 3.0, are also available online for benchmarking and compatibility testing.
According to Aaron Stewart, president of DesignOnline , "Product developers know that the decision to upgrade to a new version of an operating system needs to be made carefully. You don't want to take the chance of disrupting your own development schedules without first doing a thorough evaluation. One great advantage of our Small Device Lab is that it enables developers to test out the improved performance and new features of Windows CE .NET online without having to re-install or patch any of their own systems first. We've done the setup and configuration on our own platforms, and we offer a wide choice of architectures. We have the actual hardware online, so you can depend on the benchmark results. Developers only need to logon to our lab, upload their applications code if desired, and then get started."
"Providing embedded developers with early access to tools and software is a valuable way to help them save time and money," said Keith White, senior director of marketing for the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. "DesignOnline 's Windows CE .NET Small Device Lab helps OEMs get hands-on experience with the rich multimedia application support and connectivity of Windows CE .NET right from the desktop, jump-starting the development cycle and decreasing time to market."
The key new features delivered in Windows CE .NET include support for IPv6, file viewers, updated .NET Compact Framework beta, and improved performance.Performance on the I-bench benchmarking test for the update to Windows CE .NET was 298 seconds, compared to 351.5 seconds for the original release of Windows CE .NET and 519 for Windows CE 3.0.
The Small Device Lab hardware platforms include Hibachi's SH 4 series, Intel's Xscale architecture, National Semiconductor's Geode processor series, and NEC's MIPS VR5432 processor. The Small Device Lab also includes development tool and software components from Microsoft Embedded Partners and others, including Bird Step Technology, Entrek, Microsoft, NetClue, PointBase, Polyspace, Prosyst, StarNet, and Stellent.
