Subject: MS Security Update Slows Browser (verclsid.exe)  Posted: Sun April 16, 2006

On April 11, 2006, Microsoft issued a security update for its Internet Explorer Web browser. The update installs an executable verclsid.exe used to verify the authenticity of ActiveX class ids. To be specific, the update is "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)"

When you visit a Website requiring ActiveX, your browser will initiate a new instance of this executable. Overtime, the multiple instances of verclsid.exe will dramatically degrade your browser's performance.

Microsoft is aware of the "bug" and will release a patch to fix their patch.

Suggestions
You can either uninstall this latest update until the fix is released or you can use the Task Manager to end the process. Doing so will prevent the eventual slow down of your browser.
