Subject: Yahoo Penalties for Web Pages Posted: Fri September 30, 2005 |

I've been exploring and experimenting with different SEO methods, including some that aren't considered sound. Over the course of the past six months, these are my findings.
Some of the things to avoid are using hidden text and robot specific content.
As a test, I created a page with a subject that was fictional. I then waited for Yahoo to index the page. Within a month, Yahoo picked up the page and it was ranked #1 for the fictional terms (just some garbly-gook terms I made up).
Once I achieved top rankings, I then proceeded to add hidden text via layering. Most human users wouldn't see the hidden text unless they viewed the source for the Web page. I waited for Yahoo to index the changes (which took about 1 week). Within a month, the page was no longer in the top position of the search results on Yahoo for the fictional "terms". I then removed the hidden text and waited again.
Yahoo indexed the changes within a week, but continued to penalize the Web page when it no longer held hidden text. After close to two months had passed, the Web page was #1 again.
I repeated this process; but instead of having hidden text, I displayed content that was specific to the Slurp and the other Yahoo robots. This too resulted in a penalty.
In conclusion, some of the methods of SE manipulation via keyword stuffing no longer work on Yahoo. |
