Try to verify what the overall consensus for a web-hosting company.
Uptime/SLA

Resources
Bandwidth
Disk Space
Support

Requirements
Platform (Unix/Linux running Apache or NT running IIS.. I prefer Unix but it depends on your needs)

Bundled Features
Web Control Panel (cpanel, ensim, sphera to name a few)
Dedicated IP
SSI
SSL (not shared)
Stats (Webalizer/Analog)
Cost
SubDomains
Ability to define Aliased server paths
CGI/perl
PHP/Java
DB/DBMS
