Yahoo said it has hired legendary Silicon Valley software designer Larry Tesler away from Amazon.com to become vice president of the Internet media company's software design group.
Tesler, 60, was part of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center from 1973 to 1980 where he helped develop techniques such as "cut and paste" that are now standard in computer graphical user interfaces.
He was chief scientist and vice president of engineering at Apple Computer from 1980 to 1987--the formative Apple Macintosh years--where he helped spearhead development of the company's audio and visual technologies.
More recently, Tesler was vice president in charge of improving the "shopping experience" of consumers at Amazon, where he worked from October 2001 until last month.
In addition to his role in developing new products for Yahoo, Tesler will serve as a research fellow for Human-Computer Interaction at Yahoo Research Labs. He will be based in Sunnyvale, California, and report to the company's chief product officer, Geoff Ralston.
"Larry Tesler is one of the industry's foremost experts on creating great user experiences," Ralston said in a statement.
"His keen insights into consumer behavior will be invaluable in helping Yahoo continue to create the connected services of today and tomorrow," he said.
